The Rhode Island Manure Exchange Program

Program Basics

What is the Manure Exchange Program?
The Manure Exchange Program is a community resource for farmers and gardeners to connect, share, trade, or receive excess livestock manure to improve soil and water health on their land. The program is a free, voluntary community program to recycle valuable nutrients and organic matter in Rhode Island.

Why is there a need for the program?
Rhode Island consists of many livestock farmers who have excess livestock manure on their property. Livestock manure is a valuable material that can provide nutrients to the soil as direct fertilizer or compost for fields, crop soil, and overall soil health. Livestock manure can also pose environmental and water quality risks if it is not utilized property. The Manure Exchange Program provides an opportunity for farmers to reduce their environmental and water quality risks from excess manure, save money, and ensure farmer accessibility to livestock manure more readily.

How does the program work?

The Manure Exchange Program provides opportunities to learn about manure and compost, as well as assists those looking for manure and those looking to remove excess manure off their farm.
