Following this lesson the student will ...
- be introduced to the idea of water quality protection within a Watershed.
- understand how we all contribute to "non-point source pollution".
- explain how water pollution is caused by storm water runoff.
TEACHER'S DIRECTIONS:
A Watershed Model is used to demonstrate the geographic boundaries that create a watershed. Students will see how rainwater runs from the highest
points toward the lowest. Generally a body of water, such as a lake or river is formed at the lowest point. During the demonstration, students will see how
pollution, created by common substances such as automotive fluids, garden fertilizers and pet wastes can be carried by rainwater into the lake or river.
The Northern Rhode Island Conservation District owns a Watershed Model and can come to the school and give your students this lesson.
You can arrange for this by calling (401) 949-1480.
It is also possible to borrow the Watershed Model along with written directions for use.
